Overlanding Trails in Colorado

Alpine Loop – Located in the San Juan Mountains, this 65-mile backway takes you through alpine tundra and old mining towns.  The high-mountain passes require a high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle.  Plus, it offers beautiful views while hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing!

Montezuma Basin – Located near Aspen Colorado, the Montezuma Basin is considered challenging and can get steep but has a big pay-off in terms of views.  This trail features a creek and beautiful waterfalls with plenty of space for off-roading adventures.

Transfer Trail Road – Take a look at Glenwood Springs from the great view on this trail.  It is about 19-miles of rugged adventuring.  Consider camping since an overnight trip allows you to fully enjoy the view.  There are some narrow parts to the trail, so experienced drivers would be suited to the terrain. 

Big Stick and Buffalo Ride – A fun and easier overland trek near Steamboat Springs.  It should take less than 8 hours to complete and is a great place to start for overlanding beginners, though expect plenty of rocky terrain and challenges.  Enjoy the mountain landscapes, spacious meadows, and plenty of places to camp for the night.
